Define the first-hour outcome
Your first factory should teach the simulation, not maximize an unverified ratio. Aim for a safe work area, a small sand feed, a controlled wetting chamber, a sifting stage, and separate destinations for useful output and residue. The official store page describes the progression as beginning with sifting gold from sand, then expanding into more capable logistics and production chains. That supports this modest target without pretending every world layout or unlock order is identical. Keep construction compact enough that you can see material enter, change, and leave each stage.
Scout before committing
Walk a short loop around the starting area and note water, vertical space, hazards, existing structures, and routes you can widen later. Sandustry worlds are destructible and materials are physical, so a convenient-looking cavity can become a trap if loose material falls into it or water escapes through a gap. Choose a workspace with room above and below the line. Avoid using the only nearby reservoir as an experiment tank. Preserve an access corridor so you can reach both sides after belts, lifts, pipes, and walls are installed.
Build one observable process
Feed only a small amount of sand into the wetting area. Give water a contained basin and give wet sand a low exit that cannot be flooded by the entire reserve. Then connect the sifting step and collect each output separately. Do not enlarge the input until you have watched a complete batch. A healthy test answers four questions: where does dry sand wait, where does wet sand leave, where does gold collect, and where does every other output go? If any answer is unclear, add space or a temporary buffer.
Use buffers as instruments
A buffer is not merely storage. It shows whether upstream supply exceeds downstream capacity. Leave a visible pocket before and after each transformation. If the upstream pocket fills, the next stage is constrained. If it stays empty, the current stage is starved. Mark a normal fill line and leave an overflow route that cannot contaminate another material. This observation-based method is safer than copying a ratio from a video or community post because Early Access updates can change timing, recipes, and block behavior.
Test failure and restart
Stop sand input while water continues, then stop water while sand continues. Confirm that neither case floods or buries the machinery. Pause or leave the area, return, and check that the line resumes. Save before destructive experiments. If a test fails, change one boundary at a time: input height, outlet height, buffer size, or gate position. Do not rebuild the entire chain simultaneously, because you will lose the evidence that identifies the actual fault.
Scale only the proven bottleneck
Once the line survives starvation, overflow, and restart, inspect its buffers. Expand only the stage whose input accumulates while its output remains slow. Duplicate a small proven module rather than constructing one huge chamber. Use the production calculator to record observed items per minute; those measurements belong to your current build and save.
